Hard people living a hard life

The Lewis Man - Peter May

The Lewis Man is a murder mystery that also reveals the extreme poverty and sectarianism of the Scottish islands. May describes the scenery and landscape with incredible skill, love and respect, evoking an additional (arguably the most important) character, the main antagonist- the land.

While this is the second book in the trilogy (Blackhouse and The Chessmen) it stands alone and is a very satisfying read with a dual timeline - contemporary and the 1950s. The intricate plot provides plenty of tension even if the truth is revealed to those paying attention fairly early on.
