Delicate description and confusing romance
Based on real events this is a romantic tale of an 18 year old poet's obsession with a 12 year old girl who is described as neither physically attractive or unusually intelligent. Like Fritz's short story "The Blue Flower" which neither he nor other readers seem to understand, it is equally difficult to understand this love (if that is what it is) although that may only be because Fitzgerald does not understand it either. The prose is tight and effective and there are plenty of charming and amusing scenes throughout. I think it's probably a book I will need to reread at some point to truly appreciate.
